The Wheel Base is the central feedback device of every simulator. A Direct Drive Wheel Base connects the motor directly to the steering shaft, giving you cleaner, more detailed force feedback than belt-driven or gear-driven systems, so every curb, slide, and collision comes through with more clarity.
A DD wheel base allows a steering wheel to be mounted directly to the motor shaft. Unlike cheaper solutions, there is no belt or gear reduction drive between the motor and your hands, so the force feedback you feel is the cleanest representation of the game's physics. This construction delivers sharper detail through corners, over curbs, and track surfaces.
Torque, measured in Nm, determines how strong feedback feels. Higher torque bases can produce stronger effects and react faster to large signal changes. If you are new to direct drive sim wheel setups, a lower torque base still delivers meaningful performance gains over belt-driven hardware in terms of detail and response.
Platform compatibility depends on the wheel for XBOX, and on the base for PlayStation. Attaching an XBOX-licensed wheel to any Fanatec base activates XBOX compatibility. Attaching any wheel to a PlayStation-licensed base activates PlayStation compatibility. All products are compatible with Windows PC. By combining certain products, it is possible to create a configuration that is compatible across all three platforms.
A wheel base is the center of your setup. Steering wheels, pedals, shifters, and handbrakes all connect to the base, which then links to your console or PC through a single USB connection. When you plan your setup, consider how your steering wheel, base, pedal set, other peripherals, and mounting solutions will work together as one system.
Think about your available desk or rig space, your power requirements, and the driving disciplines you race most. Heavier wheels and larger diameter wheels benefit from higher torque. Rock-solid mounting is essential once you move to the higher torque values of direct drive, since these bases produce forces that a light desk setup may not handle well.
The wheel base is the heart of every sim racing setup, so it is worth choosing carefully. Consider the level of force feedback you want, the steering wheels you plan to use, and whether you race on PC, PlayStation, or XBOX. A wheel base that matches your needs today should also leave room to expand as your skills and equipment develop.
